The weekend of 23rd / 24th July saw 11 snipes take to the water for the South Eastern Championships.

On Saturday, the conditions appeared perfect with a gentle breeze and blistering hot sunshine however as the boats launched, the wind disappeared and it soon became apparent that the fleet was going to be challenged to a game of spot the wind.

Defending Champions, Alan Williams and Liz Crouch set an early pace and took an early lead in race 1. The chasing pack were swapping positions consistently as the fleet hunted for what little wind there was. The short race around the cans at the top end of the river saw Williams and Crouch extend their lead to win comfortably.

The rest of fleet were having to punch the tide on the way back to the finish, Richard Lambert and Patrick Biddulph were in second and had chosen to hug the South shore to stay out of the tide. Unfortunately, they had also chosen the side where the wind died to almost nothing. Guy Welch and Alison Brannon had spotted Lambert and Biddulphs struggle and chose to head for the North shore and also the short end of the line. This ultimately secured them second with Brian and Ann Gregory who after recovering from a bad start fought through to take third place leaving Lambert and Biddulph in fourth.

With the tide well away and the breeze gone completely, the second race had to be cancelled.

Sunday again saw a gentle breeze and bright sunshine. Race three saw Williams and Crouch suffer a less than favourable start allowing Gregory and Gregory to take advantage to lead at the first mark. Close behind were the pairings of Graham Hoy and Pippa Arnold and Richard Marshall and Dan Gee who rounded second and third respectively. An error in navigation caused both Hoy and Arnold and Marshall and Gee to allow the chasing fleet to close the gap. The short lap course in the top reaches of the river gave a great spectacle for the onlooking crowds and also kept the fleet bunched up together. Gregory and Gregory did not falter and held their lead through to the finish with Williams and Crouch second with Lambert and his Sunday crew Andrew Wibroe taking third.

For the first time in three years, it was not possible to crown the Champion without completing the last race and Race 4 saw Williams and Crouch take an early lead with Ian Gregory and Paul “Colin” Wilkes making a perfect slingshot start to pop out second. With Gregory and Gregory caught in the melee of boats at the start Williams and Crouch were looking well placed as they led the fleet.

Lambert and Wibroe were third and were hot on the heels of Gregory and Colin and soon managed to overhaul them. Meanwhile the light conditions were to the liking of Gregory and Gregory and they pulled their way up the fleet and began to hunt down Williams and Crouch. The breeze was becoming very patchy and shifty and Williams and Crouch could not hold of the challenge from Gregory and Gregory who eventually managed to sneak past to take the lead. Lambert and Wibroe were still chasing but could not catch the leading two.

Despite a strong challenge from Williams and Crouch they had to settle for second in the race and second overall as Gregory and Gregory held their nerve take the bullet and win their first ever Open meeting and be crowned 2006 Snipe South Eastern Champions.
