Budworth Sailing Club: 29th May 2006

Eight boats competed in total, 3 of which were competing for the Ladies trophy. The day dawned with what looked likely to be heavy rain and lots of wind; we were not disappointed, for some of the day anyway. Hail stones, sun and some races with very little wind made for a challenging and varied day.

Andy Wibroe and his crew Aisling Gilham quickly established a lead for the juniors, whilst, predictably, Debbie Love and her crew Wendy Smythe did the same for the ladies. Meanwhile, I kept track of the back of the fleet. On second race the wind dropped leaving Andy to alter his rig tension. Tom Lancaster and his crew Georgie Mills came in the winner for this race, and again Debbie for the Ladies, although more challenges were coming from Nicola and Briony.

Andy and Aisling won the 3 rd and 4th races and thus the Junior title taking the trophies back down to Blue Circle. Tom and Georgie came second, Alex and Steve Sharp were third. However, as Steve is slightly (!?) too old for the Junior fleet, Will Williams and Elizabeth Crowe were officially third. Ben and Jack Paley made an excellent effort and coped well with what were at times difficult conditions for novice sailors. As for the Ladies, Debbie and Wendy took first place, Nicola Sharp and her daughter Briony were second, leaving me to do better for next year and saying thanks to Pauline Penny as my crew for her enthusiasm. Well done to all the competitors, particularly the juniors, some of which had limited experience helming and crewing together. They all made a tremendous effort coping with varied winds and competitive sailing. I hope to see them all, and others, back next year.
